In 1973, she was elected the first president of the National Women’s Political Caucus of California, an organization founded to “recruit, train and run female, pro-choice candidates for public office,” according to Beauchamp, who looked back on her work in an article for The Times in 1998. Among the living, the family dinner table at their West L.A. Home was often host to a colorful cast of characters, Flynn said. Sometimes an elected official sat at one end of the table, an acclaimed screenwriter at the other, while Beauchamp’s friends from elementary school sat beside her.

Cari Beauchamp, a Hollywood historian and celebrated author who illuminated the ways women were instrumental in shaping the film industry, died Dec. 14. The house was designed by Sumner Spaulding in 1933 in the style of a French chateau. It was built for engineer and contractor Lynn Atkinson,[3] who commissioned the property for his wife.

“In that initial meeting, some of us knew each other from various antiwar or presidential campaigns, but this was the first time we had come together to organize ourselves, for ourselves,” Beauchamp wrote of the organization, in which she worked alongside Gloria Steinem and Bella Abzug. “We hardly looked threatening; but what I remember most clearly was our passion. Flynn described his mother, author of such books as “Without Lying Down” and “Adventures of a Hollywood Secretary,” as someone whose hard-fought success boiled down to a passion for storytelling and truth-telling, especially when it came to illuminating underappreciated women.

Where can I learn more about the cast and characters of Beecham House?

Beauchamp dove into her research in myriad ways, digging through library shelves at the film academy’s Margaret Herrick Library, the Library of Congress archives and other repositories of buried information. Not only did she discover that women wrote half the films in Hollywood’s infancy; she also revealed how the men who ran Hollywood studios thereafter effectively erased their contributions. Marion, the highest-paid screenwriter in Hollywood at the time, wrote the Oscar-winning movies “The Big House” and “The Champ” and more than 200 scripts besides — and yet no one seemed to know much about her. As a standard ITV drama it would be risible – a meagre, basic plot being parcelled out by actors constrained by lines that make them sound as if they are giving dictation to a secretary they have every reason not to trust.

Gurinder Chadha’s new six-part drama series Beecham House is set on the cusp of the 19th century in Delhi before the British ruled in that region. The love interest is a local governess, Margaret Osbourne (Dakota Blue Richards, who was Lyra in the film adaptation of Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass and no slouch). Her main activity so far is to wander around Beecham’s palatial home (“How nice it must be to sit under this tree!”) and throw into disarray his mother’s plans to marry him off to Violet, the companion she has brought with her from England. Various servants giggle and whisper in corners about the master and the mysterious baby and its attendant whom he has brought with him. “You will learn that I am a private man,” he says, although we viewers are privileged by glimpses of the erotic dreams he has of an Indian woman whose presence he reaches for yearningly as he wakes, only to find his bed empty. Sometimes you just want to gather actors to your breast, crush them close and whisper in their ears that all of this will be over soon.

The series was promoted as a "Delhi Downton Abbey", which was repeated by many critics. It received mixed reviews, with critics feeling that it did not live up to expectations as a radical historical drama, but that it remained entertaining for viewers of melodramatic period soap operas. Beauchamp was a time-traveler in the best sense of the term, often saying things such as “I’m off to 1929” before spending time with her “dead girlfriends” — researching the remarkable women of Hollywood yore. During restoration the architects added details that were unavailable 40 years before, as the technology simply did not exist. The gas company tile was replaced by random-cut slate, which could not be cut thin enough in 1960, despite Lautner's desire for such a finish. The architects also replaced the original thick framed windows with frameless glass. Tashen commissioned a pastiche rug by German painter Albert Oehlen and a hanging lamp of bent plexiglas strips by Jorge Pardo, a Los Angeles artist.
